Health Professions Act
In September 2001, the Health Professions Act (HPA) was proclaimed. The HPA encompasses 30 health disciplines, including paramedicine, and requires significant changes in the operation of our professional body. In anticipation of these changes, the College is actively setting its strategic direction to align with the requirements of the Health Professions Act.
Under the HPA, "the College must: carry out its activities and govern its regulated members in a manner that protects and serves the public's interest; provide direction to and regulate the practice of the regulated profession by its regulated members; establish, maintain and enforce standards for registration and for continuing competence and standards of practice of the regulated profession; establish, maintain and enforce a code of ethics; and carry on the activities of the College and perform other duties and functions by the exercise of the powers conferred by the Act."
